We watched both movies 2 weekends ago. We were beat, had a hectic week, kept social plans to bare minimum and just stayed home.
Gran Torino
Another great movie from Clint Eastwood. I've been in awe of him since Million Dollar Baby and this movie is of similar caliber. Clint Eastwood plays a war veteran (Korea) who is trying to live his life of quiet isolation following the death of his wife. His neighborhood's profile has slowly changed and he finds himself surrounded by Asian families against whom he mumbles racist dialogues under his breath.
The film builds its depth and develops lead characters by exploring the bond Clint Eastwood forms with the two Hmong adolescents living next door - a girl called Sue and her brother Thao. He takes on the role of their friend and mentor over the course of the movie, rescuing them from sticky or harmful situations. The movie is written beautifully right down to the end, a very sober Clint-ian ending. The name comes from Clint's 1972 Gran Torino car which is often at the center of controversy in the movie.
There is a good amount of racial slur dialog and a lot of cussing - consider yourself warned. In all, nicely written story, well acted (except Thao), definitely worth watching.
Quantum of Solace
Come ON! I don't need to write a review for a James Bond movie with Daniel Craig in it. If you haven't watched it, you should! Here is a little private (not any more) dialog MrM and I had after seeing the movie, which highlights the changing face of 007 flicks:
MrM: It was a fun movie, but not one really hot person in it.
Me: Of course there was. James Bond.
Yes ladies, the Bond movies are now being made for us! *wolf whistle*
